Firefox and Greasemonkey Revisited...

For my two readers, you might remember my rant of holding off on Firefox and Greasemonkey after writing that you should run them. Well, again I will give an endorsement for Firefox and it's extension's (including Greasemonkey). Here are a list of extensions that might interest some:

  • BugMeNot: Allow getting a generic user name and password for sites that require login (New York Times anyone?) without having any personal information provided.

  • PDF Download: Gives option to download or open a pdf in a separate tab.

  • FoxyTunes: Controls iTunes, Windows Media Player, or WinAMP in the browser status bar (bottom).

  • ieview: Allows you to switch to IE when a page (mostly microsoft.com) doesn't work as expected or needed.

  • Sage: Turns Firefox into a RSS Reader.

  • NetCraft Toolbar: Helps protect against Phishing sites. Displays date site has been up since and the actual provider.

  • Greasemonkey: Allows javascripts to be run on existing web pages. Several are already written and available at GreaseMonkeyUserScripts and Dive into Greasemonkey provides documentation into writting your own. I also have modified a script to add a search of the Harris County Library system (Houston area) from a ISBN off of amazon.com. You can download/install mine from amazon linky - houston

Hope you give Firefox a try...

This is so incredibly cool! Security be darned, I'm goin' with Firefox! In a matter of a few minutes I've whipped up a modified script that searches both the UST library, our multi-school consortium, and my Dakota County library system. Does exactly what I've done "by hand" for years, with a single click! Wow!

Thanks, Rob!

I am glad you appreciate it!

Supposedly, IE7 will support Trixie which is like greasemonkey.
